Great post that really captures the essence of modern Dylanology. Saw Dylan last year and it's pretty amazing for a 67 year old to rock like he does, even if he slurs his words into the music. But then again, he's Dylan and no one can forget his accomplishes of the past and what he's done for lyrical writing and poetry. I think we run into trouble when we compare Dylan of 40 years ago to Dylan of today. To enjoy Dylan, one must forget his accomplishments of the past and not try and compare past Dylan with present Dylan.

But the "new sound" is really just the old sound slathered in accordion, the album middling at best. I'm not expecting "Desolation Row" but "It's All Good" which carries the portent of one of those blasted-landscape finales ( like"A'int Talkin, from Modern Times) is more outline than song. I'm a fan but his travels in "old, weird America" seem pretty tepid.

I'll never understand how people can expect Bob Dylan to be other than Bob Dylan. And he still manages to bring a new sound to each album.but I guess I like the rest a bit more.
