“All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it pos ... Continue reading »

  • It may be that the Oscars can only measure degrees of excellence between the ordinary actors, not the dangerous ones.

I think that best sums up the Oscars all around. Brillant post.
  • O'Toole can get more accross with just a gesture or look than many ators do with a mountain of diologue.
  • What a wonderful post, M.A.!

I really, really enjoyed seeing him making the PR rounds for his latest movies. I just got the biggest kick out of him.

O’Toole chose a role that demands that we not just swoon over his ascots and sonnet speak—the bread and butter of his own life—but that we acknowledge and accept the side of the life force that does not quench “respectably” with age.

    That's so great.

They assigned my spot to be Sat. at 4:00 p.m. I just found out TCM is running Lawrence of Arabia at 4:00 ! What are the odds?

That's so great, too. I love when magic happens!
  • My 12-year-old and I watched Lawrence on TCM (what a station!) a couple of weeks ago on a cold, sleeting Saturday. I told him it was released the year his Dad was born, bt he commented that it didn't feel old-fashioned. He also said that Lawrence seemed always to be on edge - "was he kind of crazy, Dad?" I said, well this character certainly is. O'Toole is one of those British working actors - why, in the last 10 years he's been in 23 movies or major television productions.
  • Claire, blue girl, I will admit there's a tiny part of me that imagines O'Toole's name being called tomorrow--it's the same part that thinks one of these times, Mammy is going to hear Scarlett calling for Rhett in that terrible scene after her miscarriage.

Tom, very glad to see the next generation is on board--
  • Interesting...
