newcritics: The Grammy Awards: Yours and Mine

OK, let me get this straight. You hate the Grammy's because they didn't give fucking Eminem enough prizes?

Correct judgment, but wrong reason, critic weasel.

Oh but then you show us how hip you are, what a wayout white dude, by dropping names like Sun Ra and Charlie Mingus in the penultimate sentence.

    So very fuck you.

Lamb, what's w/ the hostility? Do you do PR for NARAS? I hate the Grammys because they're a smarmy orgy of industrial self congratulation. I love Sun Ra and Charles Mingus, because, well, they made great music.

The Grammys like the Oscars and the rest, have always been terrible but everyone knows that. Yeah, there's no center anymore, and there probably never will be again outside of Boomerville, where the focus is on the past and reunions and whatnot. Music mutates too quickly these days for that "shared cultural identity" to mean much but there's plenty around to listen too, even if the Grammy's remain clueless.

Never having paid much attention to the Grammy's (are they as boring as the Oscars?), I was amazed at the examples of past winners--as if the award-givers were trying to get it wrong.
But the proliferation of categories reflects my impression of what's happening with music: the fall-out is taking an oddly long time to land.
