This movie seemed like an exercise to me--the performances, except for Ledger, were unconvincing, probably because I felt Nolan took too much for granted and didn't develop the characters. I found it really boring. When you compared it to No Country For Old Men, it struck me that I felt no sense of being conveyed to a convincing reality--that was a frightening picture.
I told someone that I felt like Tom Hanks in Big when he's at the toy development meeting--"I don't get it. It's an insect that turns into a building. What's fun about playing with a building?" I just thought the thing was heavy handed and lifeless. I don't know, maybe it's just a bit distancing to have the dialogue explicitly poking the theme at me. Just didn't get it and wasn't entertained.
