True is that mp3 music is really worst quality that oryginal CD`s. From yours collection I`m selecting - Bruce Springsteen.

Re: Tales from the CD Changer, 1Q09

The collection of songs is very nice. I got a chance to see The Smiths on their first US tour, kinda by accident---my brother had an extra ticket, I wasn't really familiar w/ them--and the band rocked my world. The Morrissey solo stuff has never approached The Smiths stuff--he's never had another great band or great songwriting partner--and I've blown hot and cold with it, but when he's clicking his records are a joy and I can play them over and over again. I love the new one. Dan, you will too.

I love the feel of the McLagan record, my kind of sound, esp the title track. Cigarettes & Wine from the Isbell album also has great feel and some excellent imagery in the lyrics. I'm big on bands w/ feel. Astral Weeks live shows had better feel than what's on the album. Kinda wish Van had save the release for after they had done a bunch of shows so they could pull from the best of 'em since that show is all about just kind of summoning a moment.

Heard a bunch of other good records in the first quarter--the Jim Hall/Bill Frissell duo twofer, which really came out in late 2008 I think, that's why I didn't include it in the survey...and looking forward to a coupla new releases I haven't heard yet--the concept album from The Decemberists and the live album from my fave band of the moment The Hold Steady.

Re: Tales from the CD Changer, 1Q09

Tony, that Ronnie Wood album is a scream - some guys live the life. Course, it's self-hagiography - he's rarely to blame for the maelstrom of his personal life - but I was struck by the influence of Keith Richards over nearly everything...

I liked the Springsteen record, espcially that crazy Queen of the Supermarket song. Not as good as Magic, though.

Gotta get that MacLagan record - from a deli man, that's a rave.

Re: Tales from the CD Changer, 1Q09

So true, Jason, about the Moz's lyrics at their best. My fave of his solo LPs is "Vauxhall and I".

From that album's opening song, "Now My Heart Is Full":

"There's gonna be some trouble
A whole house will need rebuilding
And everyone I love in this house
Will recline
On an analyst's couch quite soon
Your father cracks a joke and in the usual way
Empties the room..."

Re: Tales from the CD Changer, 1Q09

Jason,

I'm warmed that there are other hardcopy collectors still out there beyond me a Jackson. As a mtter of fact, I hit a vinyl motherload at Generation Records during my last visit to your fare city and then walked out with an arm load of CD's from the Virgin fire sale. I'll buy them until there are no more. Jackson claims to have discovered a little shop in Greenspoint that he won't devulge the name of until he's cleaned the place out of what he doesn't already have in his ever expanding wall o' vinyl.

Mr. Morrissey... Count me as one "who doesn't". After hearing "Asian Boy" the first time, I was done with him.

The Mac album I just purchased on your reco. I'm 1/2 way through Ronnie Wood's bio, and your post happens to be timely. I'll give the Willie and Van discs a listen as well.

BTW, best parts of the Wood book are his tellings of all the pranks and mayhem him and Rod Stewart get into. Apparently, they went to see Lou Reed at the Roxy in LA one night and detuned all of Lou's guitars right before he went on. Apparently Lou never forgave either one of them for it, but they (and I) got a good laugh at that one. Com'on Lou, I dig your stuff, but lighten up will ya?
