Pipeline and Wipe Out, to be specific.

Good catch, Tom! I didn't think of anything.

I read Nunn's Tapping the Source ages ago and enjoyed it. I can barely remember it now, but was not surprised when his name turned up on the new HBO show.

I like Wipe-Out. But better than Miserilou? No way.

I first encountered surf culture when I worked a summer outdoor contracting job in the early 70s in Cape May NJ. My co-workers were all South Jersey Shore surfer dudes. I was from a rowhouse in Philadelphia. I thought: Wait, you surf on Jersey waves? Well, they managed to, somehow. Stoned all day long, including of course on the job. They seemed somehow exotic and glamorous to me, never more so than when a hurricane approached one day, and while everyone else was battening the hatches they all hit the beach to at last get some really bitchin' waves.

They didn’t start the surf music craze but they immortalized it. You could almost argue that Brian Wilson, more than Frankie, Annette or Gidget, helped popularize the idea of summer in pop culture.

Absolutely. Don Henley may have written "Hotel California," but Brian Wilson was the lead architect of the project. It was his dream that led people like John Philips to visit. As a kid, I'd hear "I Get Around" or "California Girls" on the radio, and I just knew what he was going on about.

    Excellent post.

I submit Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow by The Rivingtons and the very similar Surfin' Bird by The Trashmen. (I believe the same guy was behind both songs.)

For better or for worse, Point Break elevated the guys' movie to new levels. Of course, Apocalypse Now is infinitely better, but TBS might not exist without Braves baseball and Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves giving each other longing glances across sand and surf.

Silver Surfer rule! He's my favorite comic hero, he's very strong and powerful. It's good to see he's in your 10 Greatest Surf Contributions to Pop Culture.

I love Hawaii Five O, it's like a prelude to Bay Watch.
