Wow, this is fascinating. I really hope you post a follow-up on the denouement, when the Mean Girls Get Theirs from a Righteous Public.

Eviction is tonight. Jade Goody, the lead bully, is bookmakers pick to be evicted. 50 to 1 odds.

Sorry another comment. Living in Ireland and I have to say that I hate these realtiy programmes. My partner loves it, so we have been watching it. But to be honest, this time they have stumbled onto what has indeed turned into a major commentary on race and class in the UK.

Great post. There was a (short) interesting piece on NPR this morning.

It's also a commentary on cruelty - why do we enjoy the public humiliation of others? Seeing the clips from this season's American Idol has bene horrifying - it's all about making fun of people, some of whoma are clearly challenged by their circumstances. Yet it's the highest rated program in the US.

It is interesting how all this ties in perfectly to Ace in the Hole. It is not at all comforting to think Americans aren't alone in seeing cruelty as entertainment.

If you are interested in the Indian (desi) point of view, you might want to read this post on the fine blog, Sepia Mutiny.
