Since when did we become the guys who tied prisoners' hands behind their backs and put hoods over their heads? Since then. Thanks, George, all of a sudden you made us not so proud to be Americans. And then it got worse.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Getting back to "The Road", one thing I liked about it was its freedom from a lot of the bullshit you find in McCarthy's other novels: the wisdom-spouting ancient Mexicans and laconic old cowpokes, the characters thinking thoughts that those characters would never think, all this mixed in with truly great writing.
