A good joke or comedy must understand quickly by the listener even if it's not explained...
If they didn't understand and you explain it to them.. the joke will not be funny anymore..

I heard that the DPRK plans to screen a new digitally remastered print of Interiors at the Pyongyang Comedy Festival next February.

I'm with Out of. As brilliant as "Interiors" was it pales before Allen's earlier, and, yes, it must be said, less commercial work. I still remember stumbling out of "Take the Money and Run" feeling absolutely stunned and shattered.

I was in college when I saw Interiors with a local Philly crowd. The members of the crowd intensified the comedy with their shouts of "Don't open that door", "Don't blow in that woman's mouth" and "Step into the frame, bitch. Who the hell's talking". Comedy truly is tragedy plus the right audience.
Of course, I still I prefer his earlier, more serious movies.

Jon, you left out the most hilarious slapstick moment in the film, when Geraldine Page wades out into the surf intending to drown herself and Mary Beth Hurt chases after her into the waves. I think both Hurt and Page proved themselves in that scene to be every bit as good at physical comedy as, say, Chaplin, Keaton, and even Garbo.

Well, I can see your point, but I must admit that I liked Interiors better before Woody translated it from the Swedish and it was called Ingmar Bergman's Persona. But then, I've always been partial to the madcap stylings of Liv Ullman -- that dame can deliver a punchline likes its nobody's business! Talk about zany!
