newcritics: Live and Animated Shorts

Thanks, Claire! I now want to see most of them, mainly West Bank Story.

I love the Music Box (it was a couple of blocks from an old apartment of mine), even with those uncomfortable seats. As I recall, whatever was showing was usually great and took ones attention away from the flat, poky-spring seats. :)

Claire, it's terrific that you gave these too-often overlooked categories the attention they deserve. I had an opportunity to see the animated shorts last weekend at the fab Jacob Burns Theater in Pleasantville, NY. I agree that "The Danish Poet" was the best of the bunch. "Maestro" was fun, but an obvious one-joke. "Match Girl" was too blatantly sentimental..."Cobble Hill" too long..."Nuts" an ad for Ice Age 14...but the "Poet" was wistful, whimsical, and beautiful.

Cool, Claire! What fun. I wish I could've gone to see all of those. What a pipedream, though! I haven't even seen all the ones up for best picture, even.
Last year was the only year I accomplished that feat. I hope to be able to see these. Thanks for the reviews!

I agree with you Stephen. My favorite line from the Danish Poet was when the poet arrives at the farm house and exclaims that the farmer must be Danish. The farmer pauses and replies, "Well, perhaps we were all Danish once."

I loved this post. It's nice. All these shorts are excellent. But 'The Little Matchgirl' is really very good.It is a family picture. This is a beautiful version, putting the girl in late 1800s Russia, middle of winter and all of the tones are in grays. Thanks a lot for sharing this post.
