I sat my old mother down to watch Little Britain and she laughed herself silly - at times. It's the nature of the beast, hit and miss, but the hits are so direct they shatter the funny bone, and the misses are of the o well, next skt please.

Especially television.

Father Ted. Not a bad episode in the lot, though some are better than others. Would offend millions of Americans. Too bad!

The Office. I can't bear the American version, though I bet I'd like it better if I hadn't seen the original. Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant are brilliant. We have recently discovered Extras and are loving the first season on DVD.

We are up to season 4 of Upstairs, Downstairs and while it isn't comedy, it is probably the best dramatic (ok, so it's a soap!) series I've ever seen.

Viva Netflix.

I've been hearing good things about Green Wing but haven't seen it yet.

And of course, Fawlty Towers.

they are a very funny pair indeed and some of the vignettes are hysterical, but my personal favourites of recent times are the chaps behind 'the league of gentlemen' - very dark, with wonderfully surreal characters - and it happens to be very, very funny, even when it's disturbing (which it often is):

ps, did you know the names of andy and lou are as a homage to andy warhol and lou reed? bizarre but true. i am sure that bit of info may even make the ever-sombre lou reed crack a smile - go on, lou - it won't kill you ;-)

ah, 'great' britain - we're rubbish at pretty much most things nowadays but still pretty damn excellent in the fields of music, film, art, comedy, television.

just don't ask us to build a ship or motor car any more ... oh, we're also great at accommodating/ask-no-questions russian oligarchs.
