Very true, very cool. I still love that first Dolls album, especially Trash & Bad Girl.
One minor error. "Good Mornin' Judge" was done by Wynonie Harris, not Furry Lewis. DJ owes a lot to him. As do we all.

Damn, I was at that '82 CU gig. Didn't realize it was the first Buster Poindexter show. The band was awesome. The first eight bars of every song blew me away. Then they mellowed out, dropped the tempo and started handing around extended lazy solos. I sorta felt like I was being cheated. But it was still an excellent show.

Can't say too much about the importance and creativity of the Dolls. Changed how I feel about hospitals entirely! Even though I never got the pills. Or the nurse... yet.

Davey Jo can actually talk about his music and politics and philosophy, make sense, and make his points about the significance of the Dolls. Unlike virtually every other musician. And he's managed not to become an insufferable, remote ass as well.

Even better, the new album was a real surprise. Fresh, new stuff. Didn't sound like something that went moldy in a can twenty years ago and just got pulled out for the merchandizing extravaganza. Tight band, taking some chances.

Here's hoping Johanson has many more chapters to his life, each one bringing him the renown and appreciation he's deserved all these years!

Hey Tom, I enjoyed reading your post...I love Johansen--New York Dolls. Their music along with the Ramones broke the mold during the 70's--When SOHO was a dangerous place to venture into, and the rent was dirt cheap--the good old days....

The thing I love about Johansen is that he's got a big heart. That's probably why he's done well in so many different styles: he really opens himself up to any style of music he loves.

I'd like to see the Dolls and Mott the Hoople get into the Hall of Fame, both on the merits of their music, and because the two bands were the fathers of American and English punk.

I should have known you were another Johansen fan. I agree with your rankings -- every one of his phases has been a musical success. My all-time favorite is probably the Harry Smiths persona.
