newcritics: Death Proof But Not Boredom Proof

  • Lance Mannion · 2 years ago
You make it sound tempting, Dan, but even with Dawson in it there's no way, no how I'm going to watch another 90 minutes, let alone 114, of Tarantino reliving his glory days in the back room at the video store.

And wrecking a GTO in 1978 was cool. Wrecking one now is like slashing a Van Gogh.

    I feel your pain, Lance.

But meanwhile you gotta check out this video clip of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich doing "Hold Tight!":

Great write-up, hater. I also am tempted, but I am over Quentin Tarantino. (I won't bore you with the details.)

But, I don't think I'll ever be over a really great dive bar. The perfect dive bar is one of the great things in life. Haven't been to one in forever -- maybe you and I can meet up at this one one day.

Is there horrible violence and disturbing close-up shot in the face scenes?
I like looking at Rosario Dawson, too. But in books and movies, it drives me nuts when the dialog sounds as if someone turned on a tape recorder.
And the dive bar? Yeah, even I, a non-drinker, might like it--even if T Rex makes me run from the room. (He's among Manny's favorites.)

Hey, Blue, y'know, there's dive bars and there's dive bars. The trouble with the real dive bars is there's always the chance you're gonna get your ass kicked. And then there's the kinder gentler kind of Bohemian dive bar, of which we still seem to have some in Philly. I'm supposed to go out for a beer this Friday (for the first time in a cow's age) so I'll do a recon for you.

Kathleen, funny for Tarantino's rep, and for his homage to a type of movie that tended to be ultra-violent, but there's not a ton of violence in this movie. The two back-to-back roughest scenes, featuring vehicular mayhem in the first part of the movie, are totally telgraphed, so if you ever watch it you can do the hands over the eyes thing (which I do even in more mainstream movies. And not just for the viloent parts.)
  • blue girl · 2 years ago
Yeah, I like the Bohemian ones. But, I've dragged the Skimmer into the other kind too. And then he's pretty much quickly dragged me right back out. I always like people watching in those places. The Skimmer? Not so much.

Scope it out Friday, Dan! Have fun.

Oh, Blue, I just thought of a cool one here in Philly I haven't been to in a while, Bob & Barbara's, at 15th & South. They have a Pabst & Jim Beam special (PBR in a can of course), for three bucks (last time I checked), and on the weekends they always have this ancient sax-and-Hammond B-3 jazz combo called Nate Wiley and the Crowd Pleasers. Quentin would freak out in this joint.

You know what I'm bummed out by, Dan? We were in Philadelphia over the 4th of July for a long weekend. And I don't think I knew you then -- or at least I didn't know you lived there. Shoot. Wish I would've.

    Next time!

Hey....maybe the next newcritics shindig should be in a dive bar in Philadelphia!
  • Dan Leo · 2 years ago
Oh, definitely let me know when you're in town next, Blue. Don't worry, I'll find a goddam dive bar for us. Or at least -- as my young friend I'm having a beer with Friday puts it -- "a parody of a dive bar".

In the meantime your assignment is to click on that YouTube clip up in comment #2, put on earphones, turn it up really really loud, hit play, close your eyes, and try NOT to play air drums.

    Hey Dan,

I went Bob and Barbara's last swing into Philly. When I didn't see Nate playing sax I turned to the guy next to me and said where's Nate? He looked at me and flatly said Nate's dead. I miss Nate, he was a crowd pleaser.

The Hammond player is still kicking it out though, always liked him too, drop a 5 in the bucket for me if you go and I'll by you a beer next time around. Don't fret the $3 special still lives.
  • Dan Leo · 2 years ago
Damn, that's sad about Nate, Ed. My Friday beer-partner Willa had clued me in about it earlier tonight. But I guess he had a pretty long life. I'm glad the Hammond guy's still working it anyway. And, yeah, I'll take you up on that beer offer, thanks.

It looks like we're gonna try the Royal Tavern down on Passyunk Friday. Maybe I'll file a special report for Blue Girl, connoisseuse of all things dive.
